How to Perfect your Quran Recitation? Mistakes & Best Practices

This is one of the most common questions Quran learners ask. Even after years of learning the Quran, their Quran recitation is not how it should be. They are either slow, tend to repeat the same word many times, make tajweed mistakes, or their recitation style is not correct.

Although Allah rewards double those who strive to learn Quran and make mistakes in the process, it is essential to correct your recitation and be a perfect reciter. Doing it will not only give you peace of mind in this world but will also increase your status on the Day of Judgment.

The source of all these inaccuracies is linked to your foundation. All these mistakes perpetuate when left unfixed in the beginning and it’s hard to fix them later. Therefore, it’s imperative to have a good and proper start.

Start from Qaida

Some people make the crucial mistake of not starting from Qaida. They either think they already know the basics or they don’t consider them important. This is where their journey starts in the wrong direction. It’s like starting school directly from the 5th grade.

Qaida is of utmost importance for both starters and mid-level learners. For complete beginners or kids, it lays the foundation. It is the building block upon which the building of your future learning stands. For the building to stay strong, the building block has to be solid.

What is Qaida?

The Qaida is a book for beginners to learn Quranic Arabic. It teaches them from scratch how to read the Quran. The Qaida includes all the basics of the Quranic Arabic starting from the alphabets, joining letters, signs and symbols and their uses, practice lessons, and all the things that a child needs to learn Quran easily. It is designed in a way that teaches learners step by step starting from the easiest and proceeding to more difficult lessons without even having them notice it. Every Tajweed rule or a sign has a lesson dedicated to it which is followed by a practice lesson. If taught and practiced each lesson properly, there is little or no chance of a mistake later on.

Doing Qaida properly makes all the later stages of Quran learning extremely easy. It gets Quran learners a proper start and removes the chances of originating and perpetuating mistakes of all kinds. This is where you learn all the Arabic symbols and their roles. This is where you learn all the Tajweed rules. This is where you develop your dialect and this is where you develop your fluency.

The Qaida is only around 30-40 pages but we encourage you to spend the most amount of time here. This will save you a great amount of time learning the Quran. We, being a leading online Quran institute helping students learn Quran online have the experience of teaching thousands of students of all ages and levels. We have taught students who spent an entire year on Qaida and then finished the Quran in less than 2 years. This is the magic of learning Qaida in its true essence.

Common mistakes during Quran learning

Now that you have understood the mistakes people commit at the start that lead to permanent mistakes, let’s talk about some mistakes people often commit during Quran learning.

  1. Not learning from mistakes:

It’s not enough to have a good start only. Once you have read the Qaida, you need to put the things you have learned into practice during Quran learning. It’s quite common to make mistakes of different kinds and it’s not a bad thing. The important thing is to learn from your mistakes and try not to repeat them. The best practice is to note down every mistake that your tutor points out and work on it till you understand and fix it.

  1. Not practicing

Another common mistake is not practicing on a regular basis. People do it because they don’t feel the need for it. You start to forget your weak areas and the key points discussed in every Quran class if you don’t practice at home. When you practice on your own, you may encounter words that are difficult for you and you can ask them in the next Quran lesson. The best practice is to revise your lesson more than one time preferably on the same day.

  1. Not observing regularity

To learn Quran online fast and well, you have to be regular. Attend your Quran sessions regularly from start to end. Some people miss their classes on one pretext or another which greatly affects their Quran learning both in terms of time and efficiency.

  1. Not focusing on Tajweed rules

The most common types of mistakes are related to Tajweed. Properly applying Tajweed rules makes your Quran recitation perfect and beautiful. Don’t take Tajweed for granted. Apply the rules where you are supposed to. The best practice is to use a color-coded Quran where every Tajweed rule is marked with a different color. Be careful not to entirely rely on it and switch to a normal Quran once you have fully mastered all the Tajweed rules and you automatically know where to apply which rule.
